How much does air conditioning cost in the West Midlands? (2026 guide)

If you've been quoted anywhere between £1,500 and £8,000 for air conditioning and you're wondering which price is honest, this guide is for you. We install across the West Midlands every week — here's exactly what a typical domestic install costs in 2026, what changes the price up or down, and where installers pad their quotes.

The short answer

For a standard domestic install using a Mitsubishi Electric or Daikin unit, fully fitted with F-Gas certificate and a 10-year manufacturer warranty, expect:

SetupTypical price (fully fitted)
1 room (single wall unit)£1,950 – £2,400
2 rooms (multi-split, one outdoor unit)£3,400 – £4,200
3 rooms (multi-split)£4,800 – £5,800
4+ rooms (multi-split)£6,200 – £7,800
Loft conversion (any of the above)add ~£300

These are real prices we're quoting in the West Midlands right now, not manufacturer RRPs or best-case marketing numbers.

What's included in a proper quote

  • The indoor unit(s) — wall-mounted, brand of your choice
  • The outdoor condenser unit and wall bracket
  • Up to ~4m of insulated pipework per room (interconnect)
  • Electrical connection to a fused spur
  • Condensate drain routing
  • F-Gas commissioning and certificate
  • 10-year manufacturer warranty (Mitsubishi Electric / Daikin)
  • Cleanup, dust sheets, floor protection
  • VAT — currently 0% on air-source heat-pump technology for domestic installs (see below)

What pushes the price up

The base install covers the vast majority of homes. Costs typically rise when:

  • Pipework runs are long (>5m) — extra pipe, insulation and labour
  • The outdoor unit needs a scaffold tower or roof bracket to reach
  • Cable runs need chasing into brick or plaster rather than surface trunking
  • You want hidden pipework (fed through voids or behind cabinets)
  • You want a premium unit (Daikin Emura, Mitsubishi MSZ-LN designer series)
  • You need an electrical consumer-unit upgrade to accommodate the load

Where installers pad quotes

If you're comparing quotes and one is £1,000 higher than the others for the same rooms, ask about these line items:

  • "Site survey fee" charged separately — a survey should be free
  • "F-Gas certificate" as an add-on — it's a legal requirement, always included
  • Vague "materials" line with no breakdown — ask for pipework metres itemised
  • Extended-warranty upsells — Mitsubishi and Daikin give 10 years free with a registered installer
  • "Commissioning" as extra — again, always included in a proper install

0% VAT — the tax break most homeowners don't know about

Since April 2022, air-source heat-pump technology installed in domestic properties is zero-rated for VAT in the UK. Almost every modern split air-conditioning system qualifies (they're technically air-source heat pumps that also cool). That's a 20% saving on the whole install.

This runs until at least 31 March 2027. We apply it automatically — you never see VAT on the quote.

Running costs

A modern A+++ split unit is around 3–4x more efficient than a gas boiler for heating. Typical running costs in a well-insulated Midlands home:

Use caseCost per hour (approx)
Cooling a bedroom overnight (8h)£0.24 – £0.40
Heating a lounge on a winter evening£0.30 – £0.55
Multi-room, whole-home cooling on a hot day£1.20 – £2.00

Based on 27p/kWh electricity. For most families, running the AC costs less per hour than boiling a kettle three times.

FAQ

Is £1,950 really the starting price?

Yes — for a single-room wall unit in an easy install (ground-floor room, short pipe run to outdoor unit) using an entry-level Mitsubishi or Daikin. Most homes fall in the £1,950–£2,400 band.

Do you charge for a survey?

No. Home surveys are free with no obligation across the West Midlands.

How long does the install take?

A single room is typically 6–8 hours. Multi-room installs are 1–2 days. We work cleanly, cover everything, and hoover up before leaving.

Are finance options available?

Ask us at survey — we can point you toward 0% finance options on installs over £2,000.
