Air conditioning for a baby's or child's bedroom (UK safety guide)
Every summer we get a wave of parents asking the same question: 'the baby can't sleep, is air conditioning safe?'. Short answer: yes, and it's the single best upgrade you can make to a small bedroom in a UK heatwave. Here's how to do it properly.
Safe bedroom temperatures for babies and children
The Lullaby Trust recommends 16–20°C for a baby's sleeping room, and never above 24°C. In a top-floor UK bedroom on a 30°C day, that's genuinely dangerous — rooms routinely hit 28–32°C overnight without cooling.

Slight over-sizing is fine for nurseries — it means the unit runs on quiet mode more of the time.
Safety siting — the rules we follow
- Never mount above or directly opposite the cot or bed — cool air shouldn't blow onto a sleeping child
- Mount on the wall behind the head of the bed so airflow crosses the room and falls at the far end
- Use models with a draught-free or i-see-sensor mode (Samsung Wind-Free, Daikin Perfera, Mitsubishi MSZ-LN)
- Set temperature to 20–22°C for sleep, not the coldest setting
- Enable sleep mode / eco mode so temperature ramps gently overnight
Noise — the make-or-break spec
A sleeping child will wake at anything above ~25 dB. Only fit units that spec 19–22 dB at their quiet setting. Cheap non-inverter units run at 35–40 dB constantly — fine for a lounge, not for a nursery. The units we recommend for kids' rooms:

What it costs to run overnight
A 2.5 kW unit on quiet mode holding a room at 21°C uses around 0.3–0.5 kWh per hour. At 27p/kWh electricity, that's 8–13p an hour — roughly £0.65–£1.05 for a 10-hour night. Cheaper than a nightlight-fan-plus-lost-sleep combined.
What it costs to fit in a child's bedroom
A nursery or child's bedroom is usually the cheapest room in the house to fit — small room, small unit, short pipe run. Typical fully-fitted prices we quote across the Midlands:

Health myths, briefly
AC doesn't cause colds — viruses do. Modern units have washable filters that trap dust and pollen (great for hayfever-affected kids). The one real risk is dirty filters, so clean them every 6–8 weeks in summer — a 2-minute job we'll show you on handover.
One genuine benefit parents don't expect: because a cooled room means closed windows at night, you cut out traffic noise, pollen and the dawn chorus — all common sleep interrupters for light-sleeping children.

Is AC safe for a newborn baby?
Yes — provided the unit is sited so air doesn't blow directly onto the cot, the temperature is set to 20–22°C, and filters are kept clean. It's far safer than letting the room overheat above 24°C.
Will the noise wake my child?
Not with the units we fit for bedrooms. On quiet mode they run at 19–22 dB — quieter than most white-noise machines parents already use.
Can I install AC in a rental for my child?
Yes, with the landlord's written permission. Most landlords agree because AC adds value. We can supply a quick spec sheet you can send them if it helps.
How long does a bedroom install take?

Does it heat as well in winter?
Yes — every unit we fit is a heat pump. At a COP of around 4, heating a child's room with AC is typically cheaper than running the whole house's central heating for one room.
