Air conditioning keeps turning itself off? Here's why
A system that starts and stops every few minutes is either being told to, or protecting itself. Both are worth sorting quickly — short cycling wears a compressor out far faster than continuous running.
First, rule out the settings
- Sleep or timer mode left on from last night.
- Setpoint too close to room temperature — the unit reaches target and idles. Set it 4°C lower to test.
- Eco or 'AI' mode throttling the compressor, which can look like stopping.
- A smart thermostat or app schedule overriding the remote.
If it's not settings, it's a protection trip

Short cycling on an oversized system
An oversized unit cools the room quickly, hits target, shuts down, then restarts minutes later. You get cold blasts, humidity that never drops, and premature compressor wear. It's one of the most common consequences of quoting off room size instead of a heat-load calculation — and it's why we measure glazing, orientation and insulation before recommending a capacity.
If your system is already oversized, running it in a lower fan-speed continuous mode helps, but the real fix is right-sizing at replacement.
What to have ready when you call
- Make and model from the sticker on the indoor unit.
- Any error code shown on the display or flashing LED pattern.
- How long it runs before stopping, and how long before it restarts.
- Whether the outdoor fan is still turning when the indoor unit stops.
