Why does my air conditioning smell? Musty, vinegar and burning smells explained
Air conditioning shouldn't smell of anything. When it does, the smell itself tells you what's going on inside the unit — and most causes are fixable in one visit.
What each smell means

Why musty smells happen ("dirty sock syndrome")
In cooling mode the evaporator coil is cold and wet. Dust settles onto it, and dust plus moisture plus warmth equals mould. When you switch the unit on after a break, the first blast of air pushes those spores into the room — which is why the smell is worst in the first minute and after a period of not using it.
It's not a design fault, it's a maintenance issue. Units that get an annual coil clean rarely smell.
How to stop it coming back
- Run fan-only mode for 20–30 minutes after heavy cooling — most units have an auto self-clean setting for exactly this
- Wash the mesh filters every 4–6 weeks in summer
- Book an annual service that includes a proper coil clean, not just a filter rinse
- Don't set the temperature so low that the unit runs permanently soaked
- Keep the condensate drain flushed — standing water is where the sour smell comes from
Is it a health risk?
A mouldy unit can genuinely aggravate asthma, hay fever and eczema, and it's the reason we're careful about specifying AC for a child's bedroom. It's not dangerous in the way a gas leak is, but you shouldn't live with it — a full antibacterial coil clean sorts it in one visit.
A burning or fishy smell is different. Switch off at the isolator immediately: that's overheating insulation on an electrical component.
What a proper deep clean involves
Not an air freshener down the vent. We strip the front casing, remove and wash the filters, apply an antibacterial foam cleaner to the evaporator fins, clean the barrel fan (the part that actually holds most of the grime), flush the drain and tray, and sanitise before reassembly.
