How to choose air conditioning for your home (UK buyer's checklist)
Buying air conditioning for the first time can feel like a lot of jargon: split systems, multi-splits, inverters, BTUs, SEER, COP. This is the checklist we use with customers in the West Midlands to cut through the noise and pick the right system for the right room.
Start with the problem, not the product
Before you look at brands, decide what you want the system to do. Most UK homes fall into one of these camps:
- Cool one hot bedroom in summer (single-split wall unit)
- Cool two or three bedrooms or a home office (multi-split)
- Heat and cool a lounge, extension or conservatory year-round (heat-pump split)
- Replace portable fans across the whole house (multi-room multi-split)
The clearer you are on the problem, the harder it is for an installer to oversell you.
Single-split vs multi-split: which layout?
A single-split is one indoor unit and one outdoor unit. A multi-split is several indoor units connected to one outdoor unit. Here's how they compare:

If you only need one room cooled, a single-split is usually the right call. If you know you'll want more rooms within two years, it's cheaper to install the multi-split outdoor unit upfront and add indoor units later.
Inverter vs fixed-speed: why it matters
- Inverter units vary their speed to match the room. They use 30–50% less electricity, run quieter, and hold a steady temperature.
- Fixed-speed units are cheaper to buy but blast full power, then switch off. They are noisy, less efficient, and harder on the compressor.
- All the brands we install (LG, Mitsubishi, Daikin) are inverter as standard. We'd avoid fixed-speed for a home install.
Sizing: don't guess, calculate
Capacity is measured in kW or BTU. A rough rule is 0.1 kW per m² for an average room, but add 20–30% for south-facing windows, conservatories, loft rooms, high ceilings or home offices full of tech. The best installers do a proper heat-load calculation on survey — not a guess.

- Quiet mode / sleep mode — drops fan noise to under 22 dB(A) at night

- Is the electrical work Part P notified?
